A serious incident has shocked football in Nigeria, where footballer Chinedu Ozor has died at the age of 27 after suffering a collapse during a match.
Ozor was playing for Katsina United in a friendly match against Niger Tornadoes, held on Tuesday, August 11, at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina, northern Nigeria.
According to a club official, the player collapsed on the pitch just nine minutes into the match. He was transported for medical attention to K-Dara Specialist Hospital, where his death was later confirmed.
After Ozor's death, several local and international media reported that the footballer had shown signs of life in the morgue.
According to these reports, a morgue worker noticed movement in his hands and alerted colleagues. Ozor was then returned to the hospital and given oxygen.
However, Katsina United has categorically denied these reports, clarifying that the footballer has not returned to life.
"We have seen the news that Chinedu has later regained consciousness or 'came back to life'. We understand that people desperately wanted this to be true. We all wanted it. But unfortunately, these reports are not true," the club said.
Katsina United called on everyone to avoid speculation and respect the pain of the family and teammates.
The governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, also expressed his condolences to the 27-year-old's family, describing the loss of a young footballer who had a promising career ahead of him as particularly painful.
