Sali Berisha has commented for the first time on the loss of Republican positions in the US Congress and Senate, also providing his analysis of the factors that, according to him, influenced the election result.
Invited to the "Now" show with Erla Mëhilli, Berisha stated that the American vote was mainly influenced by the increase in prices, which he linked to two factors: trade tariffs and the war with Iran, especially the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic weapon.
"The American people, fortunate to hold free and fair elections, voted for the candidates they consider and the policies they consider best," Berisha said.
According to him, the analysis of the result should start from the economic impact that these two factors have had on American citizens.
"The fundamental cause of this major change has been the increase in prices from two main factors. The tariff factor and the Hormuz factor. The war with Iran and Iran's use of the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic weapon. So, both of these factors have been associated with an increase in real prices in the United States," the DP leader declared.
Asked whether the change in political balances in Congress and the Senate could affect his relations with the American administration, Berisha responded that he does not expect any change.
He also mentioned in this context Prime Minister Edi Rama's statements about American Democrats and Donald Trump.
"Nothing changes in my relationship with this administration. Edi Rama should be a little afraid, who just three weeks ago declared the Democrats and Biden traitors to Hashim Thaçi, and just two weeks ago sent them the message that 'you cannot defeat Donald Trump with votes and you try to defeat him with Zvërnec'. So Sali Berisha is constant," he said.
Berisha also spoke about relations with the US Embassy in Tirana and his absence from the reception of the new US ambassador. He claimed that he has not been present at most of the welcoming ceremonies for US ambassadors who have served in Albania.
"In anticipation of his arrival, of his welcome, I have only been to an ambassador once. Only on one occasion! On seven or eight occasions I have not been," declared Berisha.
Regarding contacts with the Embassy, he said that the Democratic Party is open to communication and that its representatives constantly present their positions on developments in the country.
