The Netherlands have made a sensational choice for the national team bench, appointing Spaniard Xavi Hernandez as the new national team coach.
The former Barcelona midfielder will take over as coach of the "Tulips" after Ronald Koeman's departure, starting a new chapter for the Dutch national team.
Xavi, 46, returns to the bench after a period of rest since leaving Barcelona in 2024, where he ended his adventure after three seasons in charge of the Catalan team.
Now, a completely new challenge begins for him, as he will lead a national team for the first time.
Xavi's appointment is also interesting because of his football philosophy.
Formed in the Barcelona academy and influenced by the idea of a game based on possession, ball circulation and offensive football, he is expected to try to give the Netherlands a clear and more modern identity on the pitch.
It is this philosophy that he mentions in his first words as the Tulips' coach.
"I consider it an incredible honour to become coach of the Dutch national team. As someone who trained at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football. You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Other great coaches, especially Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, also played an important role in shaping me as a player and coach," said Xavi.
For Xavi, this is an important opportunity to restore his name to the big coaching scene, while for the Tulips a new era with ambitious objectives begins, with a non-Dutch coach after 48 years.
His debut on the bench will be against Germany in the Nations League, on September 24.
