A serious incident has rocked the Mediterranean Games being held in Taranto, Italy. A 25-year-old athlete of French origin, participating in the competition, has become the victim of sexual violence during the night between August 31 and September 1.

The news was reported by the Italian news agency ANSA, according to which the perpetrator of the attack is suspected to be a Moroccan footballer. The latter is reported to have returned to his country of origin on Tuesday morning. According to initial reports, the athlete had pushed the aggressor away, seeking the help and attention of the board staff. Emergency medical services and police responded to the scene, while the girl, who was taken to hospital for examination, was not injured.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation into the incident; the sexual violence is said to have occurred in one of the structures of the Olympic Village of the Mediterranean Games that began on August 21. In these hours, more light will be sought to shed on what happened to the victim who was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment and for examinations of the case. Investigators have received images from the CCTV cameras of the Olympic Village structure.
