Russia denies Germany's accusations of drone attack in Leipzig

The Russian Embassy in Germany has categorically denied accusations by German authorities of Moscow's involvement in an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport, describing them as "unfounded, absurd and unreasonable."

In a statement published on Telegram, the embassy accused Berlin of consistently damaging relations and cooperation mechanisms between Russia and Germany.

According to the Russian side, Moscow's ambassador to Berlin has been summoned to the German Foreign Ministry, where he was officially informed of the government's protest regarding suspicions of Russia's involvement in the August 5 incident, when a drone equipped with explosives was used at the airport.

The Russian embassy claims that Germany has blamed Moscow without presenting convincing evidence and, at the same time, announced punitive measures against Russia for what Berlin considers "escalating hybrid attacks."

The measures taken by the German government include the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn until September 18, as well as the termination of the 2011 Russian-German agreement on the operation of cultural and information centers. This includes the Russian House in Berlin.

The Russian ambassador described Berlin's decisions as an unprecedented escalation in relations between the two countries. He also warned that Germany's measures would have consequences and that Berlin would bear responsibility for them.

The embassy statement said that the incident at Leipzig Airport was used as a "provocation" to advance the interests of the Ukrainian government, European political circles that support military buildup, and the defense industry.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also reacted to Berlin's decision. She stated that Germany will face an "appropriate response" after the closure of the Russian House and Consulate General in Bonn.

Speaking to the Russian state news agency TASS, Zakharova accused German authorities of using a fabricated reason to further worsen bilateral relations. According to her, Berlin has not presented sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations against Moscow.

Zakharova also said that Russian institutions in Germany have long been the subject of criticism by German authorities and that the Leipzig incident was used as a justification for taking new measures.

The diplomatic clash comes after the German government accused Russia of the attempted drone attack in Leipzig and announced a series of measures against Moscow.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that investigations have led to the conclusion that the operation was planned by Russian intelligence services and carried out by people operating at lower levels.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul confirmed that he had summoned the Russian ambassador to officially communicate Berlin's protest and inform him of the government's decisions.

According to Wadephul, the Russian Consulate General in Bonn will be closed on September 18, while the agreement related to the operation of the Russian House in Berlin will be terminated.

The Russian House, a cultural institution originating from the Soviet period, has been under the surveillance of Western authorities for years, which have raised suspicions that it may also have been used for activities related to Russian intelligence services.
