Former British Prime Minister  Keir Starmer  has announced that he will also resign as an MP, just a few weeks after leaving the leadership of the government.

His decision will lead to a by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in London , which Starmer has represented since 2015 and is considered a traditional Labour Party stronghold.

In a statement to the Camden New Journal, Starmer called it a "great honour and privilege" to represent the area for 11 years, adding that the time had come to "pass the baton to a successor".

He said that after leaving Parliament he will devote himself to international issues, including defense, security, trade and technology, as well as his work to combat violence against women and girls.

The resignation comes even though after leaving the post of prime minister in July, Starmer had stated that he would remain an MP until the next parliamentary election, scheduled for 2029.

His decision was criticised by the Conservative Party. Its leader, Kevin Hollinrake, accused Starmer of "another U-turn", saying the by-election would cost British taxpayers.

The date of the by-election will be set after Starmer formalizes his resignation from the MP's mandate.
