The German government said on Tuesday that Russia was "responsible" for an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport on August 4.

"The federal government concludes that Russia is responsible for the hybrid attack in Leipzig," Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said during a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday afternoon. He added that the attack fits the pattern of a "long series of destabilizing operations" against Europe.

On August 4, a drone carrying an explosive device was found at the airport, near Ukrainian cargo planes. The device did not explode, as the detonator was suspected to be defective.

Investigators also suspect that a second drone may have collided with a transport plane that was in the surrounding area.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the August 4 attack fits into what he called “the consolidated pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.” He also said there was a possibility that Germany could again become a target of similar actions.

Russia's responsibility has long been debated by security experts, but Moscow has so far denied any involvement in the incident. The statement by German authorities marks a significant escalation of accusations against Russia regarding alleged sabotage activities and hybrid operations on European territory.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is of particular strategic importance. It is used by the German military and NATO allies to transport military goods, while also serving as a base for the Ukrainian company Antonov Airlines, which transports a large part of Ukraine's air cargo.

At the same press conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul announced new measures against the Russian presence in Germany. He said he would order the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn.

Germany will also terminate the contract for the "Russian House" in Berlin, an institution that has long been criticized by some observers, who have accused it of being used for espionage activities and spreading Russian propaganda.

The incident in Leipzig/Halle is expected to increase tensions between Berlin and Moscow, at a time when Germany is strengthening security measures against suspected hybrid threats and increasing its support for Ukraine.
