The agreement between the LDK and the LVV for the election of Bekim Sejdiu as president has encountered an obstacle within the Democratic League of Kosovo itself.

LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku has announced that six MPs from his party have declared that they will not vote for Sejdiu, saying that after this development, the country is "inevitably" heading towards elections.

Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Arben Gashi, Armend Zemaj, Kujtim Shala and Janina Ymeri have declared against the candidacy.

Abdixhiku made their positions public after the meetings of the Presidency and the LDK Parliamentary Group, held on Tuesday.

According to him, the situation within the Parliamentary Group is in contrast to the position of the party's Presidency, which had previously unanimously supported Sejdiu's candidacy.

"Six MPs have decided not to respect the decision of the Presidency of the Democratic League of Kosovo. Specifically: Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Arben Gashi, Armend Zemaj, Kujtim Shala and Janina Ymeri have declared that they will not vote for the proposed candidacy ," said Abdixhiku.

He announced that after the Presidency meeting, each MP was asked to support the candidacy agreed upon with the LVV. The opposition of six of them, according to Abdixhiku, has put an end to his efforts to conclude the process of electing the president through a political agreement.

"I could do that much, I couldn't do any more. Not with this parliamentary group, not with this division, not with this division, I couldn't do any more," he declared.

Abdixhiku said he had attempted to find a solution that, according to him, would avoid the concentration of power in the hands of a single party and would remove the issue of the president from the logic of party interests.

"I have tried to give a mature opinion, the focus of the Republic, with very little probability, of a party that has had absolute demands for its own president. Unfortunately, we are losing such an opportunity to escape this individual politicization," he said.

The agreement for Sejdiu had been reached the day before between Abdixhiku and the leader of the LVV, Albin Kurti. But the opposition of six LDK deputies calls into question the securing of the necessary votes for his election and, according to Abdixhiku, brings back the possibility of new elections.
