Civil war among American socialists
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The possibility of US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez running for president in 2028 has exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the leading socialist organization in the US.

The clashes are related to the political direction of the organization, the relationship with its most prominent politicians and, especially, the possibility of early support for the AOC.

Critics of the DSA's national leadership argue that the organization is missing a significant opportunity to expand its political influence. They cite AOC, Bernie Sanders and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani as figures who could help the socialist movement gain broader support.

On the other hand, the more radical wing of the organization wants the DSA to maintain a clearer ideological program. In its platform published in July, the organization called, among other things, for the abolition of the Senate, a drastic reduction in the role of the Department of Defense, and, in the future, the abolition of the police and prison system.

Several politicians affiliated with the socialist movement, including AOC, have distanced themselves from these positions. Ocasio-Cortez has emphasized that she is a member of the New York chapter of the DSA and not the national organization.

Clashes have also increased over the process of selecting the candidate that DSA will support in the 2028 presidential election. The DSA branch in New York has opposed the national leadership's decision to maintain more control over the candidacy approval process, raising suspicions that this could hinder a quick endorsement for AOC.

Meanwhile, the organization's more radical wing has openly expressed opposition to the possibility of her running. A Marxist-Leninist-Maoist group within the DSA has labeled AOC an opportunist politician and has opposed the idea of her becoming the presidential representative of the socialist movement.

The debate has been further complicated by controversial statements by DSA leaders on issues such as Fidel Castro, Cuba, and the war in Gaza, which have sparked criticism even within the movement itself.

However, DSA leaders say that the organization is experiencing a huge increase in membership and that internal clashes are part of the history of socialist movements.

In the background lies a larger question for the American left: should the socialist movement focus on electoral victory and government, or maintain a more radical program even if it limits the ability to build a broad coalition of voters?

If AOC decides to enter the 2028 presidential race, this clash is expected to become even more intense.
