War preparations: Over 50,000 US troops on standby for Iran

The United States maintains more than 50,000 troops in the Middle East as part of its confrontation with Iran, while President Donald Trump's administration is giving conflicting signals about the future of the military operation, the New York Times reports.

According to the report, Trump ordered the deployment of US forces as part of the war against Iran, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, Marine expeditionary units and fighter jets.

The American operation, called "Epic Fury", had as its objective, according to Trump, "the destruction of Iranian missiles and their missile industry."

However, the status of the operation remains unclear. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on Tuesday that the operation had ended, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the focus was on ensuring the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump himself later declared that this effort had also been suspended.

On Wednesday, the US president wrote on social media that he would end the war and guarantee safe passage for ships in the Strait of Hormuz if Iran "accepts what has been agreed upon."

According to the New York Times, the US Navy continues to enforce the blockade of Iranian ports, imposed after Iran de facto closed the Strait of Hormuz.

A US warplane on Wednesday hit an Iranian-flagged oil tanker that was trying to bypass the blockade.

The report notes that before the start of the war in February, there were about 40,000 American troops in the Middle East, while now the number has exceeded 50,000.

Among the deployed forces are about 2,000 paratroopers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division, who, according to American officials, could be used for operations in Iranian territory, including taking Kharg Island, a key hub for Iranian oil exports.

There are also 2,500 Marines and 2,500 sailors from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit in the region, who could be used to seize strategic islands or territories.

Also, hundreds of US special forces troops have been sent to the Middle East since March, with the possibility of their use in operations against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The New York Times also reported that the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George HW Bush, along with accompanying fleets and over 10,000 Marines and sailors, are in the Arabian Sea.

From there, the United States has the capacity to strike Iran with missiles and fighter jets launched from aircraft carriers.
