Russia has decided to close the German Consulate General in St. Petersburg, further escalating diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Berlin.
Moscow's decision comes in response to measures taken by Germany to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and a Russian cultural center in Berlin.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that the German consulate must cease its activities no later than September 18, 2026. Its employees must leave Russian territory by the same date.
Moscow has also ordered the closure of Goethe-Institut centers in Russia.
Employees sent from Germany must leave the country by September 13th.
The diplomatic clash between the two countries has escalated after Germany's accusations that Russia was behind an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport in August.
Moscow has denied these accusations, calling them unfounded.
