Etna erupts again, red alert for aviation: Volcanic ash heads south

The Etna volcano has brought renewed concern to Sicily, after authorities raised the aviation alert to red due to the emission of volcanic ash from craters at the volcano's summit.

The Etneo Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has issued a new VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation), changing the color code for aviation to red.

Ash emissions are being continuously monitored through the institute's network of visual and thermal cameras.

The ash is heading south.

According to initial estimates, a high eruptive column has not formed. However, the ash released into the atmosphere is being transported by winds in a southerly direction.

For this reason, attention has focused on the possible impact of this phenomenon on air traffic. Estimates are now awaited on the impact of ash emissions on the airspace of Catania-Fontanarossa airport.

The situation remains dynamic and is being closely monitored by INGV specialists.

Any change in the volcano's activity or in the direction of ash spread could also affect air traffic in the area.
