United States President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with new tariffs over its proposal to make Canada an "associate member" of the bloc, suggesting the move could be seen as hostile to the United States.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said his reaction would depend on what European leaders aim to achieve.

"If it's well-intentioned, then that's fine. If it's bad-intentioned, we'll put very heavy tariffs on it," Trump said. He also suggested the US could ban trade with Europe "on a lot of things."

Trump described the possibility of Canada joining the EU as "ridiculous" and called the US's northern neighbor a "terrible trading partner."

His comments came just hours after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed paving the way for Canada to become the EU's "first associate member," as Ottawa seeks to strengthen ties with Europe at a time when relations with Washington are deteriorating.

However, it remains unclear what “associate membership” would specifically entail.

This status does not currently exist in the EU treaties, and von der Leyen did not clarify what rights or obligations would accompany such a status. Any proposal would also need the support of EU member states.
