Jorlan Lopes da Silva

A dress, a wig, women's sandals, sunglasses and painted nails. And in his arms a child of about two years old, who was not his relative. It is precisely with this disguise that Jorlan Lopes da Silva, 33, accused of killing 16 people in three months, tried to evade the police by passing in front of the agents without being identified. The plan failed due to one detail: as he left, his clothes moved, revealing a tattoo, which allowed investigators to identify him.

He was arrested on Sunday, September 13, in Mulungu, in the Agreste region of the Brazilian state of Paraíba, after an intensive 48-hour manhunt. He was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the state's Department of Justice.

Investigations and confession: I committed at least 80 crimes

According to Brazilian police chief Douglas Garcia, Jorlan is under investigation for 16 murders.

However, during interrogation, the suspect stated that he had committed at least 80 murders, a figure that the investigation has not yet officially confirmed, but which, if confirmed, would rank him among the most horrific serial killers in history, alongside English doctor Harold Shipman (218 victims) and Colombian Luis Garavito, known as "The Beast" (138 murders).

Jorlan has rejected this characterization, denying that he is a psychopath: “I am a good man, I am not a threat to anyone,” he declared, claiming that he only killed criminals and that he wanted to “cleanse society.” The Civil Police are now comparing his statements with technical evidence and murder records, to verify whether the number matches the crimes actually committed.

The investigation reveals a history of violence dating back to his adolescence: according to his confession, he committed his first murder at the age of 13. During his life, Jorlan spent about five or six years in prison, only to be released, after his last sentence, in May 2026.

Double murder at Rio Tinto

Among the cases attributed to Jorlan is the double murder of two merchants, which occurred on August 1 in Rio Tinto, on the northern coast of Paraíba. According to the Civil Police, four other men participated in the crime with him. Investigators are also investigating the death of a young woman, whose body was found after the suspect himself showed agents the place where he had buried her.

Escape attempt and arrest

Jorlan was hiding in a community in Cabedelo, in the João Pessoa area, linked to a criminal organization: the Civil Police suspect a connection between him and a criminal group originating from Rio de Janeiro, which also operates in Paraíba.

The agents were pursuing him and two other men, both of whom were later arrested; Jorlan, thanks to his disguise, narrowly escaped capture. According to the police, after the murders he hid in the forests of the state of Paraíba, which made it difficult to locate him for a long time.

After the hearing for the security measure, Jorlan Lopes da Silva was sent to the Desembargador Sílvio Porto prison in João Pessoa. Investigations are ongoing to clarify his involvement in other murders. The child who was with him is fine and has been entrusted to doctors for the appropriate checks./ Corriere della Sera
