The tragic explosion in Elbasan, where two people lost their lives and 10 others were injured, has brought back to attention the danger of using gas cylinders in buildings.

Civil engineer Erion Softa calls for a change in the rules for their use, warning that one gas cylinder can have the same effect as several kilograms of TNT.

Softa said that the five-story building in Elbasan was reconstructed and that the damage was not a result of interventions in the building's structure, but from negligence. According to him, the buildings were not designed to cope with such explosions, so a solution is required for the way gas cylinders are traded and used.

The engineer called for the use of cylinders in such facilities to be banned or clear safety rules to be established. He stressed that traders should only offer certified cylinders, while users should undergo on-site inspections on how to install and use them.

"I think there is a legal basis for the use of gas cylinders that needs to be regulated. The facilities were not built to withstand such explosions. We are not dealing with damage to the structure of the building due to the intervention, but due to negligence that needs to be addressed. Gas cylinders cannot be sold normally, they cannot be used in shared spaces. Their use in such facilities should be banned or a clear protocol should be established so that such events do not happen again. Gas cylinders should be removed from use. Those who sell them should have them certified and users should undergo an on-site verification of how they are used. Such a cylinder has the same effect as several kilograms of tritium ," said Softa.

The explosion in Elbasan is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak in the pipes connecting a 15-liter cylinder, located on the first floor of the building, to the 69-year-old's apartment on the third floor.

As a result, 69-year-old Hamit Ibra and his neighbor, 82-year-old Hatixhe Berisha, lost their lives. The building has been declared uninhabitable and is expected to collapse, while 15 families have been left homeless.
