Greece bans electric skateboards

The Minister of Citizen Protection in Greece, Mihalis Chrysochoidis, has declared that there will be a complete ban on the use of electric skateboards for persons under 18 years of age.

Also, for rented skateboards, it will be decided that they will have mandatory insurance.

"If you get hit by a scooter today, who will compensate you? Where will you go for justice? Therefore, mandatory insurance even for rented ones," said Chrysochoidis.

As a third measure, he mentioned the dumping of skateboards on sidewalks, saying that this must end.

According to him, municipalities should take measures for parking and, if necessary, reduce the number of permits, in order to respect pedestrians.

What does the new framework foresee?

At the heart of the changes is a complete ban on the use of electric scooters by minors on public roads. The measure is being considered due to concerns from road safety experts, as there have been an increase in cases of young people without protective equipment and without knowledge of traffic rules.

The Greek government estimates that their use by minors has reached uncontrollable proportions, especially in high-density urban areas.

The new framework also provides for mandatory civil liability insurance for adult users of electric skateboards, to cover damages and accidents during traffic, as cases of pedestrian injuries and collisions with vehicles have increased.

The new law is in the final stages of preparation and is expected to be put out for public consultation within the next two weeks, with the aim of being approved immediately thereafter.

The regulation is also expected to include higher administrative fines for violators and companies that offer skateboards outside the established technical standards.

Controls are expected to be tightened, with a particular focus on vehicles that exceed speed limits or have been illegally modified. Import and trading companies suspected of selling models without the necessary safety certifications will also be targeted.
