There is a line that separates protest from violence, civic discontent from destabilization, and the exercise of a constitutional right from activity that aims to paralyze the normal functioning of the state.
This limit is not determined by the number of protesters, the severity of the slogans, or the radicalism of the political demands. It is determined by the nature of the actions, their organization, their continuity, and, above all, by the goal they aim to achieve.
This is precisely where the need arises to look at what is happening with a cool head.
We no longer have an ordinary protest before us. We do not have a spontaneous outburst of discontent, nor even a revolution in the classical political sense of the word.
We are faced with a phenomenon of public violence, with elements of organization and continuity, that raises serious doubts about a much greater goal than the expression of dissatisfaction.
Spontaneous violence can erupt suddenly, but it cannot be sustained indefinitely without a mechanism that fuels it.
Let's analyze the facts, without emotions and without political prejudice.
The violence continues for hours. Its main actors remain largely anonymous. There is no identifiable leadership that publicly takes responsibility for its organization and objectives.
In the name of students, human barricades are created, behind which masked thugs hide. In various parts of the city, groups appear, committing violence and burning whatever they can. Important places are attacked and situations are created that hinder the normal life of the city.
But what impresses you most is the logistics.
Protracted violence doesn't just require people willing to strike. It requires tools, supplies, coordination, displacement, and resilience.
Think about it: even the perpetrators who stand for hours on the streets need water and food, in addition to the masks they use to hide their identity. Even the means of violence need to be secured, transported, and distributed. Even the groups operating at different points need to have some coordination.
None of this by itself proves the existence of a single organizing center. But taken together, these circumstances require a much more serious explanation than the usual formula: the people are dissatisfied and are protesting.
Dissatisfaction may explain the motive for a protest, but it does not automatically explain the organization of violence.
This is the fundamental difference.
In fact, what we are seeing seems to exceed even the usual capacities of violent protests organized by our political parties.
Their protests, even when accompanied by clashes, have generally had a beginning, an end, a known organizer, and a declared political objective.
Jo me deklarata politike.
Ultimately, maintaining public order, protecting institutions, and guaranteeing the free exercise of constitutional rights are fundamental obligations of the government.
These obligations are not fulfilled by tolerating violence, nor by using it as a pretext to suppress peaceful protest.
The democratic state must be both a guarantor of protest and an insurmountable obstacle to violence.
Because when violence begins to replace politics and anonymity replaces responsibility, the problem is no longer just order on the streets.
The problem is the authority of law and the functioning of the constitutional state.
This is no longer an issue that can be resolved with press statements.
