Bomb alert on Dublin-Rome flight

An Aer Lingus passenger plane traveling from Dublin to Rome was diverted to a French military base this morning after a suspected bomb threat.

The plane was expected to land at Fiumicino airport at 10:30 a.m., but changed its route while flying over France, heading towards Évreux air base, in Normandy, about 100 kilometers from Paris.

The French government said the situation was being monitored in real time, in accordance with security procedures. Meanwhile, the French Air Force announced that fighter jets had been scrambled to intercept the passenger plane after a suspected bomb threat.

The plane was diverted and escorted by fighter jets to the Évreux base. All 151 passengers and six crew members were moved to a safe area, while specialized explosives disposal teams were deployed at the base.

Another Finnair plane, traveling from Helsinki to Rome, was escorted this morning by the Italian Air Force, following an anonymous tip-off about a suspected bomb.

The plane landed normally at Fiumicino around 09:30, while explosives specialists began checks, according to security procedures.

False bomb alarms have increased in recent weeks, affecting about ten commercial flights and causing plane diversions and security forces to intervene.

On Tuesday alone, at least seven planes faced threats. Four of them were operated by the low-cost airline Ryanair, while two flights were destined for Rome's Fiumicino airport from Lisbon and Dublin. Even in these cases, the planes were escorted to landing by Italian fighter jets.

Also on Tuesday, a Ryanair flight from Manchester to Murcia, Spain, was evacuated after landing. There were 114 passengers and seven crew members on board.

European authorities are trying to determine whether the series of these consecutive alerts could be part of a coordinated action.
