Is Netanyahu at risk from a Democratic victory in the US?

Benjamin Netanyahu's political rivals aim to exploit the Democratic victory in the US to form a government without "Bibi" as prime minister, arguing that he has squandered bipartisan American support for Israel, which has been stable for generations.

Democrats won majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in Tuesday's US congressional elections, a blow to President Donald Trump, fueled in part by deep resentment over the unpopular US-Israeli war on Iran.

The US vote took place a week after elections in Israel, where Netanyahu's right-wing coalition lost its parliamentary majority but achieved a result good enough to deny his main opponent, Gadi Eisenkot, a clear path to ousting him from power.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to hold talks with political party leaders on Wednesday and Thursday before tasking one of the two politicians with forming the next government. Netanyahu, meanwhile, will remain in his role as acting prime minister.

The United States has been Israel's staunchest ally for generations, under presidents from both political parties, providing billions of dollars a year in military aid since the 1970s.

But, unlike previous leaders, who were careful to maintain good relations with both Democrats and Republicans, Netanyahu has openly supported the Republicans.

Support for Israel among Democrats and some Republicans faltered after Israel's military offensive in Gaza following a Hamas attack in 2023, and fell further this year after Trump and Netanyahu ordered a joint strike on Iran.

Several Democratic candidates made criticism of American military aid to Israel one of the main arguments of their campaign.

On Tuesday, Trump, who has expressed support for Netanyahu, promised on Election Day that he would cut off $4 billion in annual funding to Israel, saying the move would eliminate a “disadvantageous argument” that Democrats were using against him.

Eisenkot declared on Wednesday that, under his leadership, Israel will renew its partnership with Washington.

"We will renew and deepen this partnership, strengthen the bipartisan foundations on which it has been built for years, and work to move the entire Middle East forward," he wrote on the social network X.

Yair Golan, the leader of Israel's center-left opposition party, the Democrats, declared on X that the results of the US midterm elections "show how toxic Netanyahu is to both Democrats and Republicans."

Meanwhile, the leader of the centrist opposition, Yair Lapid, said the results show that "Israel cannot afford" Netanyahu's continued stay in power.

"This endangers our security, calls into question our democracy and will destroy our position in the international arena," Lapid declared in a post on social media.

Netanyahu has so far remained silent on the outcome of the U.S. vote. His office did not respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, Udi Sommer, a political science professor at Tel Aviv University, predicted that the new US Congress, where Democrats will have a majority, will be more hostile to Israel than any other Congress in the history of relations between the two countries, Reuters reports.
