What does Trump's defeat mean for Europe, what happens to the Euro? What

Democrats have won control of both houses of the US Congress. For Europe, the main issues remain trade tariffs and Ukraine, areas in which Trump continues to have considerable authority.

Donald Trump has suffered one of the biggest defeats of his political career, after Republicans lost control of both houses of Congress to Democrats, in elections that became a referendum on his presidency.

As of this morning, Democrats had gained 25 seats in the House of Representatives, bringing their total to 220 seats, two more than the 218 seats needed for a majority.

In the Senate, they took seven seats from Republicans, including in Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Maine.

High prices played a significant role in voters' decision. About two-thirds of those polled on Election Day said Trump's trade tariffs had hurt the economy.

The president stated that he would accept the results, but added: "I do not consider this a blow to me."

He also made it clear that he would use the presidential veto to block the Democrats' agenda, posting a photo of a red hat with the word "VETO" embroidered on it.

But how much can a Democratic-controlled Congress really change for Europe and financial markets?

Will the Democratic Congress end the threat of tariffs on Europe?

Most likely not, because Trump's tariffs no longer depend on Congress.

After the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs he imposed using emergency powers in February, the US administration moved them under Section 301 of US trade legislation. This provision allows the president to act without the need for a vote from lawmakers.

Democrats can hold hearings and slow down the approval of candidates proposed by the president for important positions, but they cannot easily take away this power.

James Smith, a markets economist at Dutch bank ING, believes that the separation of powers in Washington could push the president to rely even more on these powers.

"Like foreign policy, trade is another area where the president can exercise power unilaterally, without Congress," Smith stated in an analysis published before the election.

He did not rule out the possibility of imposing new tariffs on Europe, which, according to him, would have a significant impact on US inflation and Federal Reserve policy.

What will happen to American support for Ukraine?

 Investitorët reaguan përgjithësisht me qetësi.

“We think a full Democratic victory would be neutral or slightly positive for the fiscal outlook. Congress could limit Trump’s expansionist agenda and, with it, the budget deficit,” said Diego Barnuevo, a market analyst at payments firm Ebury, in emailed comments.

Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, is more cautious.

"Wall Street traditionally welcomes political gridlock because it reduces the likelihood that Congress will pass extreme legislation. But this time it may be different," Yardeni wrote in an analysis published Monday.

His concern relates to the debt ceiling, the legal limit that determines the amount the US government can borrow.

A power-divided Washington will still have to reach an agreement on raising this ceiling. A prolonged political standoff over the issue could raise borrowing costs, rather than lower them.

Barnuevo expects the debt ceiling to become a real constraint at some point during 2027.

What is expected to happen to the euro?

Foreign exchange market analysts doubt that the election result will bring long-term changes.

For the US dollar, the Federal Reserve's monetary policy continues to have a greater impact than the political makeup of Congress.

“The dollar continues to react mainly to developments related to the Federal Reserve, which are not expected to be immediately and directly affected by the outcome of the midterm elections,” Francesco Pesole, foreign exchange strategist at ING, and his colleagues said in an analysis published on Tuesday.

Even the euro faces its own problems.

Energy prices remain high, largely due to the war with Iran. ING expects inflation in the Eurozone to remain close to 4%, while investors are seeking higher interest rates to hold French government bonds.

The new Congress will take office in January.

Until then, Trump will continue to have a Republican majority in both chambers. Even after Democrats take control of Congress, the president will still have the power to veto. /euronews
