Power is a big piece of meat, and those who possess it are the same ones who preserve it, distribute it, and use it to maintain their position. Those who aim for it must have the appetite to exercise authority and the courage to take responsibility for what comes next. Currently, the protest wants to remove a carnivore, but it will not allow anyone to take its leadership. Over 100 days later, it has not been able to find anyone in leadership, not even a vegetarian, who can take the responsibilities of tomorrow. As a result, a carnivore continues to remain in power, while vegetarians keep the table surrounded.
But vegetarians don't eat meat.
Like every protest, ours began with a grievance, such as the protection of Zvërnec and the concern that public land and protected areas are being put at the service of private interests, and along the way other grievances were added, rejecting the government, the opposition, and demanding a change in the current political system. The success and attention of the first days created the opportunity to establish a transparent assembly, which paved the way for the election of a coordination team and consequently the election of a leading figure with an alternative program. The closure of this road allowed this moment to pass.
But the protest continues.
Recent events have further exposed the consequences of this gap. They began blocking the entrance to Parliament, were pushed back by police cordons, and started egging again. This time with a gender shift. Most are women and girls who follow other women and girls, filming them, accusing them of theft, and hitting vehicles carrying food products.
What deserves attention in this case is the case of the verbal attack on Iris Luarasi with the slogan “you do not represent women”. In fact, even though Iris has a long public history in the field of gender equality and the protection of women's rights, she cannot represent all women, much less those who followed her. This is impossible. With this call, the activists have placed themselves in the role of representing all women. The calls degraded to the monstrous accusation of “femicide”.
Someone's political choice, even if it contradicts your beliefs, does not give you the right to hysterically shout such serious accusations, especially without facts.
With this action, the activists appointed themselves judges of who has the right to represent women and who does not. According to this logic, if you are not them, you do not represent women. So, these women and girls activists have the exclusivity of representing women in Albania. The situation with Iris Luarasi was created by those activists who shout about women's rights, without any principled axis on gender issues and who are ready to organize protests for the rights of women and girls, rights that already exist, but that they do not yet know about. To my knowledge, gender equality does not license such behavior and the gender of the aggressor is not a mandate that ensures more rights.
This discrepancy reveals a distorted understanding of gender activism. Gender cannot be turned into a weapon for anyone's political persuasion. In this form, the cause loses its value and becomes the private property of the loudest group.
As for the other vegetarians who have monopolized the microphone, it seems to me that they are a bunch of cucumbers who have not reached their personal and professional lives and have turned their perpetual indignation into capital. It seems to me that daily activism nourishes them, gives them status and identity. So far they have an audience, an enemy and a role, things that their previous life did not give them.
But when the protest is over, what will these activists do? What will they represent when the cameras' attention goes elsewhere and the public no longer remembers them? This movement has created people who seem to need permanent activism, because the end of the protest could mean the end of their relevance. Where will this accumulated frustration, the hunger for public recognition, and the crowds that applaud every insult go? The answer to these questions perhaps explains where all this aggression comes from.
The division into different groups makes the organizational failure of the protest clearer. Specifically, yesterday, one party remained in front of the Prime Minister's Office and another blocked the road, where they also confronted a citizen, hitting his vehicle. The problem goes beyond this incident. A movement without authority cannot impose rules, let alone control the movements of the crowds. Everyone speaks in the name of the protest, but no one takes responsibility for its consequences.
This is a revolt of gazelles who have confused democratic freedoms with the rule of the forest. And gazelles have only two instincts: to seek fresh grass and to escape from predators. That is why they are at the bottom of the food chain, because they ensure survival through avoidance and not confrontation. For this very reason, today, some gazelles have begun to use their freedoms to roar and declare themselves representatives of all animals, behaving as rulers of the forest. The moment they are asked to choose a leader, face danger and take responsibility, that is when they start the conflict among themselves.
Politics has always rewarded appetite, organization, and the willingness to make decisions at the right moment. The strongest political actors are definitely the carnivores, since they build structures, discipline, and the ability to cope with situations. Protesters have strong reasons to reject the carnivores, but their refusal to choose a leader has left them in this position. They have rejected anyone who has come forward, accusing them of hijacking the protest and being servants of some existing party force. They have used an ambiguous purity test and have ultimately lost the chance to make the change they seek. Informal protest figures without a mandate are found everywhere, but leadership is not. The same logic of the gazelle: responsibility is a risk that must be avoided at all costs.
Daily repetition has destroyed people's mobilization skills, media attention only increases when a member of parliament is being persecuted, and credibility is going to zero. Although there are many angry citizens, they no longer come out because they are looking for a strong movement with a leader or team with clear ideas for the future, not actions that incite division, baseless accusations, and an inability to control those who act on their behalf. When you can't control the actions of your people, how can you manage the consequences of the victory you claim?
Power will continue to remain a big piece of meat and whoever is determined to take it must first have ambition and then accept the responsibility of accountability, before, during and after their actions. Meanwhile, the gazelles are howling and kicking the police cordons, without providing a concrete alternative.
Therefore, governments don't fall with vegetarians.
