Albania has lost its sense of humor. Fortunately, it has a government.

Albania once had a variety show.

Not just in Tirana. There were in every city. The stage of Shkodra, Durrës, Korça, Vlora, Elbasan… Each city had its own people who sang, played, did skits and, above all, knew how to make Albanians laugh.

And they laughed. Of course not political humor, because there was censorship and self-censorship. But mocking customs, bureaucracy, everyday phenomena existed. And it was allowed.

On Friday or Saturday night, the television was ready. Albanian Television brought the humor of variety shows from all over the country. There were songs, parodies, characters, jokes. There was humor with the neighbor, with the clerk, with the mother-in-law, with the police, with the boss, with the bureaucracy and, when it dared, even with the government.

It was an Albania with a television at home, but with a lot of humor.

Today we have dozens of televisions and much less humor.

The stage shows disappeared, the stages were emptied, the artistic troupes were dissolved and Albanian humor became more or less an endangered species. Once every city had its own stage show. Today every city has at least one local television station, several portals, dozens of studios and hundreds of people who speak seriously.

Very seriously.

Maybe this is the problem.

Albanians have many reasons to laugh, but very few places where they can laugh.

Today, on television, the only space for humor remains Top Channel's Orange. A group of talented actors continues to keep alive a tradition that was once much broader. Now it is directed by Agron Llakaj, an actor with long experience in humor, who is not only a performer, but also a creator and writer of the materials he plays. Today, Orange must take on the heavy burden of making Albanians laugh. Why do I say heavy burden? Because they are left alone and the burden falls on them. Because they are part of Top and the burden of responsibility increases.

The ball is first, so Orange can't be second...

And this is where the question arises:

Why not give humor what Albania produces more than any factory: politics?

Because we don't lack raw materials.

On the contrary, we have overproduction.

The government produces humorous material every day, without the need for authors. Ministers produce characters. Parliamentarians produce dialogues. Speeches produce skits. Press conferences produce monologues. Political statements produce jokes.

And, best of all, they're all free.

A humorist can spend three days thinking up a joke.

Politics gives it for three minutes.

A screenwriter can get tired of creating a grotesque character.

Then an official appears on television and ruins all his work: the real character is more grotesque than the fictional one.

Once upon a time, the comedian had to invent the situation.

Today, it's enough to turn on the TV.

Moreover, with the pace of Albanian politics, the comedian risks not being able to grasp current events.

They wrote a skit on Monday.

The government changes on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the statement changes.

On Thursday the version changes.

On Friday, the comedian removes the sketch because reality has surpassed him.

He gets it again on Saturday.

Because reality has produced another.

This is probably the only Albanian industry that does not need a strategic investor.

There is endless raw material.

But political humor doesn't just mean making fun of politicians. It means doing what good humor has always done: showing the absurdity of life through laughter.

A minister can become a character.

A government meeting can be turned into a skit.

A press conference can become a parody.

A parliamentary debate can turn into theater.

A political statement can take the place that pop jokes once had.

And the public can laugh at power without having to hate it.

Because humor is not only a political weapon. It is also a way to avoid being taken too seriously by those who take themselves too seriously.
