"Fight corruption at the highest levels" - Message from the German

The German Ambassador to Tirana, Karl Bergner, has given a clear message to Albanian politics and justice institutions: the path to the European Union passes through an independent judiciary and a real, unhindered fight against corruption, including corruption at the highest levels.

At a time when the relationship between politics and justice is at the center of public debate, the German diplomat has made it clear that these standards are non-negotiable and that changing laws, without concrete results in practice, is not enough.

Karl Bergner, in an interview with DW, stated that judicial independence and unhindered efforts against corruption, including high-level corruption cases, are non-negotiable prerequisites for EU membership.

According to the German diplomat, judicial reform has been a key factor that has enabled the advancement of Albania's EU membership process.

"A strong rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights and a pluralistic democracy are at the core of European values. Respect for the independence of the judiciary and unhindered efforts against corruption, including high-level corruption cases, are non-negotiable preconditions for Albania's progress in the EU accession process," the ambassador declared.

The Ambassador believes that " Albania will continue and increase efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, as well as to fight corruption and organized crime, to name some of the most important areas."

According to him, changing laws is not enough, emphasizing that "both the EU and Albanian citizens expect to see real and tangible changes in practice, as well as the creation of the necessary capacities in public administration and independent institutions."

The German Ambassador added: "In this regard, judicial reform has been a key factor that has enabled the advancement of Albania's EU accession process. For the future, Albania is committed to further reforms related to the rule of law. This has been Germany's main focus on Albania's path towards EU membership for many years and will remain so."
