European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has criticized the changes to the law on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, stating that they conflict with Kosovo's obligations towards the European Union.
In a statement to the media, Kos stressed that respecting the rule of law is a fundamental condition in the European integration process.
"The second issue relates to the rule of law. We reaffirm our strong support for international law. The discussions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) show once again how essential it is to maintain respect for the rule of law and for our values, which form the foundation of everything we do, especially in the enlargement process.
International law is also essential for peace and security. This is of particular importance in the Western Balkans, especially after what we have seen after the death of the war criminal, when nationalist tendencies have begun to reawaken. We have seen in the past what can happen when these tendencies prevail.
"I also want to be very clear. In Kosovo, changing the law on Specialist Chambers contradicts the fundamental obligations that Kosovo has towards the European Union and this is unacceptable. Changing the rules while a judicial process is still ongoing contradicts all recognized international standards of the rule of law," Kos said.
