The vehicle market in Albania continues to expand at a high rate, while an increasingly visible development is the growth of electric cars and the weight of Chinese brands. Data for the period January-September 2026 show that 74,168 vehicles were registered for the first time, of which 58,986 are cars.

Registrations peaked in June, with 9,915 vehicles, followed by July with 9,614. September saw 7,639 vehicles registered, marking a slowdown compared to the peak summer months. January saw 6,895 vehicles registered, February 7,306, March 7,891, April 8,707, May 8,116 and August 8,085.

Tirana concentrates the largest share of the market. The Tirana Regional Directorate resulted in 31,549 new registrations, or over 42% of the national total. Durrës ranks second with 11,975 vehicles, followed by Fier with 5,708, Elbasan with 4,161 and Shkodra with 4,146.

In Vlora, 3,103 vehicles were registered, in Laç 3,034, Korça 2,646, Berat 2,335, Peshkopi 1,581, Kukës 1,535, Saranda 1,462 and Gjirokastër 933.

Another important indicator is the origin of the vehicles. South Korea leads with 19,509 vehicles, while China has climbed to second place with 11,848 vehicles. Germany follows with 8,930 and Italy with 8,552 vehicles. 6,104 vehicles were registered from the United States, 5,056 from Switzerland and 2,984 from Canada.

But the strongest change is happening in the electric vehicle segment. By the end of September, 7,209 100% electric vehicles were registered, while the total number of electric vehicles of various categories reached 7,793.

During September alone, 716 electric vehicles were registered, indicating that this segment is occupying an increasingly visible part of the vehicle market.

In this category, the dominance of the Chinese brand BYD is pronounced. During the nine months, 4,891 BYD electric cars were registered, while the total number of vehicles of this brand in the electric category reaches 4,897. This means that BYD represents about 68% of all electric cars registered during the period.

Following it are AION with 383 electric vehicles, Volkswagen with 343, Wuling with 217 and Changan with 178. Fang Cheng, Geely, Avatr and Xpeng also appear on the list, highlighting the growing presence of Chinese manufacturers in the Albanian market.

In the overall car market, however, traditional European brands continue to have a large weight. Volkswagen results with 12,121 registrations, Mercedes-Benz with 10,919 and Audi with 7,462. Hyundai registers 5,519 vehicles, Toyota 2,695, BMW 2,032, Ford 1,951 and Land Rover 1,622.

The data also shows that the Albanian market continues to rely heavily on used vehicles. Only 20% of registered vehicles are 0–4 years old, while 7.5% belong to the 5–8 year age group. The majority, 51.9%, are vehicles 9–15 years old, while 20.6% are over 15 years old.

This means that more than 7 in 10 cars registered during the nine-month period are over 9 years old, indicating that in parallel with the rapid growth of electric vehicles, the import of relatively old cars continues to dominate the market structure.

According to the data, 75.7% of vehicles were registered by individuals, compared to 24.3% by entities. Cars account for about 79.5% of all vehicles registered for the first time in Albania during January-September 2026. ( Ekofin.al )
