In the debate about gender pay, there is usually a familiar picture, men earn more than women. But the latest regional data shows that Albania does not present a uniform picture. In the Berat region, the opposite is true. According to INSTAT, during 2024, men were paid an average of 3.2% less than women, making Berat the most interesting case in the country.

On the other side of the map is Gjirokastra, where the gap is more pronounced in favor of men. There, men were paid an average of 12.4% more than women, making this region one of the strongest examples of gender pay inequality.

Berat is also a special case in terms of salary levels. With an average gross monthly salary of around 63 thousand lek, it was the lowest-paid region in the country. Men in Berat earned an average of 62 thousand lek per month, the lowest level recorded for men among all regions. However, unlike the rest of the country, women in this region had a higher average salary than men.

On the other side of the map is Gjirokastra. Although the region had an average salary of 72 thousand lek, above the level of some other regions, it presented a higher difference in favor of men.

The data also shows that Tirana remains the region with the highest salaries for both genders. Men in the capital were paid an average of around 89 thousand lek gross per month, compared to around 84 thousand lek for women. The difference amounted to 5 thousand lek per month. Meanwhile, women in Durrës had the lowest average salary in the country, with around 63 thousand lek.

These differences raise questions about the employment structure in each region. The weight of administration, industry, services and other sectors, as well as the distribution of women and men by occupation, are factors that need to be examined to understand the differences in wages.
