Albania towards the Greek model of price reduction?

The Albanian government has launched the “Price Mirror” initiative with the aim of providing greater transparency of the prices offered by businesses in the market. The portal with the same name will be an online platform where anyone can be informed about a variety of products, both domestic and imported. The Minister of Economy, Delina Ibrahimaj, in an interview with journalist Rajmonda Lajthia shared some details of the initiative and the reasons why the government decided to focus on prices.

" We have been concerned about price levels since the beginning of the year. Although inflation is not at worrying levels, some prices have remained high. Meanwhile, in the last two years we have seen the depreciation of the European currency, which practically made imports cheaper, but this phenomenon has not been reflected in the final price.

For this reason, we decided to create this platform, which will ultimately serve as a mechanism for more transparency. As a result, it will offer even more competition ,” said Ibrahimaj.

According to the minister, the platform envisages that the price will be recorded at the source. If it is a domestic product, transparency will begin from production to sale. If it is an imported product, it will begin from customs to the market.

Initially, the platform will feature basket products, followed by industrial products. The Minister announced that talks have begun with large supermarkets in the market to realize this idea.

" We are in talks with large supermarkets that have a presence in all cities. We are looking for the best-selling food product, both domestically produced and imported, in order to provide price transparency."

"The second step will be an analysis of gross and net profit margins. This analysis will enable us to understand why the final price is high and on this basis we will undertake the appropriate policies that will have an impact on alleviating the situation ," the minister explained.

A similar scheme came from neighboring Greece, where the government reached an agreement with supermarkets to reduce prices for over 1,600 products. Is Albania heading in the same direction?

" We will go in that direction. When the list of products is crystallized, in conversation with suppliers, markets, we plan to start a conversation about defining some products, to concretize a similar scheme like Greece", - Ibrahimaj concluded .

According to data, this pricing platform will be ready by September.
