The funeral that could cost Serbia dearly

The European Commission has warned Serbia that the possibility of continuing talks on its accession to the European Union will be reviewed, after the Balkan country buried Ratko Mladic, convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, with state and military honors.

"As you know, discussions on Group 3 are currently underway with member states. And this discussion needs to take into account the recent political developments that we have seen ," said Guillaume Mercier, the European Commission's spokesman for enlargement, at a press conference on Tuesday.

For years, the European Commission has supported the continuation of accession talks between the European Union and Serbia, recommending the opening of Group 3, for which Serbia is considered technically ready.

The last intensive engagement on this issue was before the summer holidays, when the European Commission called on member states to reach an agreement on opening this group and thus unblock the negotiation process, which had practically stalled for almost the last five years.

"In July, we made our assessment regarding Group 3. It was a technical assessment of the reforms and the various steps that needed to be completed in order for Group 3 to be open. This assessment was made in July, based on all the relevant elements that were available at that time," Mercier explained.

Serbia has not opened any new negotiation chapters since December 2021.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa issued a joint statement, describing the scenes from Belgrade during the funeral of convicted war criminal Mladic as "shocking".

"The elements of official support, as well as the presence of some senior Serbian officials at the funeral, are deeply disappointing. They show a failure to confront the dark chapter of recent European history, and are contrary to the values on which Serbia's path towards the European Union is based," the leaders of the main European institutions stressed in a joint statement.

Meanwhile, von der Leyen will soon begin her regular annual tour of countries in the region. There is no confirmation yet whether she will visit Serbia on that occasion.
