US President Donald Trump posted a photo on social media that caused strong reactions.
The photo was a map of the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Greenland and Iceland, all covered by the American flag with the inscription "United States of America".
Trump posted the image on his Truth Social platform without explanation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted to the post and said that Mexico "is not and will not be a colony or protectorate" of any foreign country.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country.
Meanwhile, Iceland summoned the United States ambassador for explanations, following the image showing the island and other countries covered by the American flag.
Iceland's Foreign Minister summoned the US ambassador to Iceland, Billy Long, who officially took up the post only last month, Icelandic media reported.
The Icelandic foreign ministry said it clearly expressed its position that "the post was completely inappropriate."
US President Donald Trump has repeated several times since beginning his second term that Canada should be a US state, while he has demanded that Greenland be part of the United States.
However, the inclusion of Iceland and several Caribbean countries on a map with the American flag is a new development that has brought strong reactions from these countries.
