Relations between Israel and Great Britain are escalating. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel would close the British consulate in Jerusalem and called the London government "hostile."

The strong reaction followed the announcement by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband that they would ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Miliband spoke of ethnic cleansing by what he called settler terrorists, and accused the Israeli government of turning a blind eye.

The announced sanctions went further than expected, with the clear aim being to signal a change in the UK's approach towards Israel.

Miliband stated that the new British stance goes beyond previous policy, considering illegal not only the construction of settlements, but also the occupation of Palestinian territories itself.

According to him, settlement expansion, especially the E1 project in the West Bank, threatens to make the creation of a viable Palestinian state and the two-state solution impossible.

The sanctions will include companies and individuals that provide financing, construction and other services to the settlements.

The UK will also ban advertising on its territory of illegal settlements.

Miliband said full legislation could take up to nine months, but sanctions on extremist settlers accused of inciting or supporting violence would be implemented immediately.

London has also toughened its stance on arms exports.

Miliband said the government would reject applications to export weapons and equipment that could significantly contribute to the continuation of the occupation.

Regarding the war in Gaza, he said there is growing evidence that war crimes may have been committed, but the UK does not qualify the situation as genocide, arguing that such a determination belongs to international courts.

Eleven countries – including France, Canada, Spain and Poland – will apply the same sanctions to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, which are illegal under international law.

The British decision has been strongly opposed by Israel and the United States of America.

The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called the move "irrational" and accused London of discriminating against the Israeli government and Jews.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog warned that the sanctions would constitute serious interference in a sovereign state, while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that if Britain acts against Israel, "Israel will act against Britain."
