Warning: A new 9/11-like attack may be in the works

The head of Britain's spy agency, MI5, has warned that a new strike, similar to the September 11 attacks, could be being prepared in areas where intelligence services are not looking.

In an article published in The Independent newspaper, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the attacks in which Al-Qaeda militants crashed passenger planes into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said that security agencies must be ready to adapt to current and future challenges.

"We know that the next strategic shock, by definition, will not resemble the previous one. Perhaps that is the most important lesson of all. The uncomfortable truth is that the next strategic shock may already be taking shape somewhere we are not yet looking," said MI5 director Ken McCallum.

McCallum wrote that Al-Qaeda, although weakened, remains a threat, as does the aspiration of that group and other militants to carry out attacks that cause mass casualties.

He said MI5 is also facing increasing state-sponsored aggression, ranging from sabotage carried out through criminal intermediaries to cyberattacks on power plants.

The Director of MI5 emphasized that unlike 2001, many systems and services are in the hands of the private sector, so cooperation between governments, businesses, and the academic world is required to eliminate vulnerabilities and react rapidly in cases of crisis.
