Panic in Greece, Crete hit by 5.7 magnitude earthquake

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck a sea area near Crete, Greece, on Friday morning, with tremors felt strongly in the south of the island.

Tremors were reported particularly in the areas of Sitia and Ierapetra, where residents experienced moments of panic.

According to the mayor of Sitia, Giorgos Zervakis, the earthquake was strong and of considerable duration, which increased concern among citizens.

However, local authorities are calling for calm, stressing that the situation is being closely monitored. So far, no material damage or injuries have been reported.

After the main earthquake, several other aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale were recorded.

According to experts, the epicenter was south of the Lasithi region, with a shallow depth of about 5 kilometers, which explains the wide spread of the tremors as far as Kasos and Karpathos.

Seismologists point out that the area is known for high seismic activity due to the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Expert Vasilis Karastathis described the earthquake as a common phenomenon for the region, while seismologist Akis Tselentis said that a stronger earthquake is not expected, but warned of aftershocks in the coming days. However, he advised citizens to temporarily avoid activities at sea, due to a small risk of seismic waves, and to check old buildings for possible damage.

Experts recall that seismic activity in Crete is related to the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the region one of the most active seismic zones in the Mediterranean.
