He began his second term with strong popular support, but squandered it to the point of being considered un-American. President Trump's Mistakes
A promising start and the dream of making history
It was mid-February 2025, the first year of Donald Trump's second term, when White House economic advisers visited the president to deliver excellent news: American household incomes were rising, pension funds were filling up with money, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was growing beyond expectations.
Meanwhile, the Democrats were in complete disarray and didn't know where to turn.
"A lot of good things," the president had commented, savoring in advance the idea of the place that fate was preparing for him in history.
Perhaps that is why, a few weeks later, he ordered the bombing of Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had convinced him that by immediately eliminating Ayatollah Khamenei, he would be able to defeat in a matter of days the enemy that for half a century had called America the "Great Satan."
In this way, Trump thought he could place himself on the same historical level as Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II.
But things didn't work out that way.
That fatal decision would set in motion a chain of catastrophic mistakes, caused partly by hubris and partly by incompetence, paving the way for Tuesday's massive electoral rejection.
This is the story of Donald Trump's mad dash towards disaster, reconstructed day by day and issue by issue by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Associated Press (AP).
Tariffs and the return of inflation. President Trump's first mistakes
Trump had returned to the White House with a strong political mandate.
The first issue he invested his political capital on, in April, was tariffs. He was convinced that through them he would teach the Europeans a lesson and generate enough revenue to make the tax collection system of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) unnecessary, perhaps even to the point of abolishing it.
This was the first major mistake.
The Supreme Court would later declare the tariffs illegal, which, however, would not provide the anticipated revenue nor revive American manufacturing industry.
On the contrary, they would pave the way for a strong return of inflation.
Meeting with Putin and the unfulfilled promise for Ukraine
Another key moment of the first year was the August summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin.
Gjatë fushatës elektorale, Donald Trumpi kishte premtuar se do t’i jepte fund luftës në Ukrainë brenda 24 orësh.
No one can deny that Trump, while weighing the advantages and risks of an attack on Iran, also had in mind the hope of distracting the media from the scandal surrounding billionaire paedophile Epstein, a man to whom Trump, according to the article, sent pornographic drawings in the form of greeting cards.
However, the president had decided to proceed with the attack on Iran, promising that everything would be resolved within six weeks.
War with Iran: The Mistake That Accelerated Disaster
Once again, things did not go as planned. The war caused clashes with US allies. At the same time, Trump became too close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a choice for which even Vice President JD Vance himself would later criticize.
The policy also caused another painful rift with a former key Trump supporter, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson. Generals and military strategists had warned the president about the dangers of closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes. But Trump didn't listen.
The consequences were the explosion of gasoline prices and the general increase in the cost of living.
The Trump family's enrichment and corruption allegations
As Americans faced ever-higher prices, they watched the president and his family grow richer.
Among the controversial issues was the idea of selling access to Trump's social media posts in advance, through which he influenced the movements of financial markets. Corruption had begun to emerge as a significant concern in public opinion polls.
However, during the Dallas Convention, Trump had promised $5,000 to every American, with the aim of encouraging them to vote for his candidates, which turned out to be the wrong choice.
Midterm elections: The referendum that Trump himself demanded
As the president's popularity continued to decline, advisers advised him to keep a low profile and avoid excessive public appearances. But Trump did exactly the opposite. He turned the midterm elections into a referendum on himself.
At the same time, he continued to boast about the magnificent ballroom that was being built in the White House.
His behavior resembled that of Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution: a leader detached from the problems of the people, focused on luxury and personal grandeur, while social discontent grew.
The electoral revolution and Trump's political downfall
And the revolution did happen. But this time it wasn't a violent revolution like the French one. It was an electoral revolution, which turned against Donald Trump himself. And this time, figuratively speaking, it was his political head that ended up under the guillotine.
