Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, through a video posted on Facebook, spoke tiredly about the December 28 elections and the election of the country's president. While speaking with numbers, Kurti said that it is unnecessary to waste more time heading towards the elections.
According to him, organizing new elections would cost Kosovo at least 10 million euros. He added that the elections will not bring a solution. Among other things, he listed some of the offers made to resolve this situation but added that they were rejected.
Kurti added that the leaders of PDK and LDK are behaving even worse than Fatmir Limaj last year. According to him, they do not want power or responsibility for themselves. He added that according to him, they do not want LVV to have power.
"Dear citizens, After 10 months of blockade during the year 2025, in the elections of December 28 of the year we left behind, the people of Kosovo spoke more clearly than ever before in the post-war period. It is the obligation of every political entity and party leader to behave in accordance with that expressed will.
The 10th Legislature has elected the Presidency of the Assembly and the Government. It should now elect the President and avoid elections because they are unnecessary and waste time and Kosovo's budget funds. Organizing new elections would cost Kosovo at least 10 million euros, then due to the lack of functioning of the Assembly we would lose many tens of millions of euros from the international community, while the results of the new elections could be more or less similar to the existing ones.
Since the main problem remains the need for 80 MPs for a quorum on the issue of the President, the elections will not bring a solution. The election result must be accepted and respected, because it represents the will of the citizens and the basis of democracy. The VETËVENDOSJE! (LVV) Movement has secured the majority of votes and MPs, therefore it demands that this result be taken into account in political processes and decision-making. If we go to the elections in June, and LVV with its partners (GUXO, Alternative for Minorities) does not reach 80 MPs, then we will go to the elections again in the fall or winter. Who benefits from this?!
In accordance with the outcome and circumstances, I have made continuous invitations to the opposition parties, as well as continuously offered alternative solutions. So far, without success.
I made an offer for co-government with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). This offer included: the post of deputy prime minister and four ministries. It was rejected.
I also proposed another alternative: switching the positions between the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, LDK would take the position of Speaker of the Assembly, the current Speaker would become Deputy Speaker. In this case LVV would not have the three high state positions as they had complained about until now. This was also rejected.
I have also made a concrete offer to the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) to unblock the political situation. In this offer, I proposed a truce between the current Speaker Haxhiu and the representatives of the PDK, where the PDK could take the position of Speaker of the Assembly. So, Speaker Albulena Haxhiu would become Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, while Bedri Hamza or Vlora Çitaku would take the leadership of the Assembly. This would be a big concession that we make for Albulena Haxhiu to give up her place to Bedri Hamza or Vlora Çitaku.
Let's not forget that 4 people in LVV have more votes than the PDK chairman: besides me, also Glauk Konjufca, Albulena Haxhiu and Hekuran Murati who also has more votes than Bedri Hamza. Meanwhile, if we compare it with LDK, 10 people from LVV have more votes than the LDK chairman.
Dear citizens, the Republic of Kosovo needs the well-being of its institutions and institutional stability.
We went with a candidate from our entity when we were very close to midnight between March 5 and 6 with the first and second candidates, only after we did not reach a consensual candidate and only after there was no single proposal from the opposition entities.
We proposed the candidate Glauk Konjufca, who is the second most voted person in the history of Kosovo, and Dr. Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku.
Above all, another solution was offered again, where Mr. Konjufca himself declared that he could withdraw if a consensual figure appeared. Despite this, the opposition parties, to this day, have not presented any name for a presidential candidate. Neither in meetings with me nor publicly to you.
We must take into account and respect the will of the people expressed through the election result: LVV has 51.1% of the votes or 57 deputies, while our majority reaches 66 deputies.
Democracy should be based on the will of the people and the election result, not on political agreements that bypass and violate it. Without respecting the will of the citizens, there can be no political agreement. Meanwhile, the goal is to avoid repeated elections and ensure institutional stability. With the current election result, no opposition party has sufficient numbers to propose a candidate for president without cooperation with each other.
Thus, compromise offers have been made to the opposition parties, offering them important positions in institutions, in order to reach an agreement and avoid institutional deadlock. Unfortunately, these generous offers have been rejected even though they are very favorable in relation to the number of MPs the opposition has.
Every meeting with them has been initiated by me every time, as if Kosovo is mine alone. The leaders of PDK and LDK are unfortunately behaving even worse than Fatmir Limaj last year. In reality, they do not want either power or responsibility for themselves. All they want is for us and me to not have power. But, this is not something they decide,” he said in the released video.
