"I want the Albanian passport because my grandmother is from Albania, from Shkodra and my blood is Albanian".

This is Mustafa Ugur Gonulal, an Albanian from the diaspora in Turkey. His greatest wish is to have an Albanian passport, as a way to fulfill his grandmother's bequest, to search for his family roots.

"As a diaspora, we demand the right to citizenship, because we are Albanians. We have not forgotten Albania and we will not. For this reason, we do not clearly understand the situation because we constantly see foreign citizens who have managed to obtain Albanian citizenship, while we do not have this opportunity because we are only required 1 document such as a birth certificate.

Why don't they integrate the Diaspora? Having the support of the Diaspora means more development for the country, because we are ready to contribute in many fields in the country. By gaining citizenship, we will preserve the continuity of our identity and we will inherit it to future generations".

The Albanian diaspora in Turkey is estimated from half a million to 1.3 million individuals, who arrived at different times over the centuries, and especially moved to escape wars and genocides. Most of those who arrived before the 1930s do not have any Albanian documents to prove their origin.

A request of this community is the recognition of the documents that are issued by the Turkish archives, in order to obtain Albanian citizenship and identity./ A2 CNN
