The Tirana court has given a new prison sentence this Friday to Arbër Çekaj, the businessman sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment by the Special Court for trafficking 613 kg of Colombian cocaine in Albania.
Arbër Çekaj was found guilty of attempting to escape from prison 313 in the capital in August of last year. Due to the shortened trial, his sentence was reduced to 1 year.
In the same file, the court finally sentenced Lulëzim Çepelen to 2 years in prison, already imprisoned in 313 when the escape attempt took place. He was accused of "giving assistance to a prisoner to escape". According to the court, Çepele cut the veins on the day of the event to create distraction for the security workers.
Çekaj tried to escape together with Fatmir Pjetri, who is being tried separately. On August 8, 2021, they got out of the ventilation zone and then, using a rope made of sheets, descended into the space in front of the prison gate, but could not get out of the enclosure.
