There is a special, even somewhat painful, club in the history of football: that of the legends who have never officially won the Ballon d'Or. This list of "disappointed greats" includes names like Paolo Maldini, Gianluigi Buffon, Andrés Iniesta, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Franco Baresi.

However, the legendary former Milan captain has a special history with the most prestigious individual trophy in football. Although he never officially won it, Baresi had an original version of the Ballon d'Or at home, thanks to an extraordinary gesture from Silvio Berlusconi.

Baresi himself, who passed away today at the age of 66, had revealed this behind-the-scenes story in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, recalling Milan's magical season in 1989, when the red and black team dominated European and world football.

"In the 1989 Ballon d'Or edition, I came in second place, behind Marco Van Basten and ahead of Frank Rijkaard. The podium was entirely Milan-owned. On that occasion, President Berlusconi gave me an original version of the Ballon d'Or," Baresi said.

In that edition, the first three places were occupied by Arrigo Sacchi's Milan players, a team that included some of the greatest footballers of the era.

Baresi remains one of the greatest defenders in football history. The Milan captain for more than two decades became a symbol of the red and black club and, even without winning the official individual trophy, his name remained engraved among the legends of this sport.
