German carmakers Audi and Porsche have decided to enter Formula 1.

The statement was made by the head of the Volkswagen group - the parent company - this Monday, reports the BBC.

Herbert Diess said discussions on entering F1 have taken place at board level.

He said the executives of Audi and Porsche, which bring the most revenue to Volkswagen, argue that this could bring in more money.

Speaking at an event in Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen is based, Diess said Porsche preparations are more concrete than Audi, without giving details.

Porsche is expected to enter F1 through a partnership with Red Bull.

Audi can become part of the acquisition of one of the existing companies in F1 such as McLaren, Sauber, Aston Martin and Williams.
