A few hours after being transferred to Fier prison, Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj declared that he has been placed in an isolation facility with three serial killers sentenced to life imprisonment.

In a letter written from his Fier prison cell, made public on his social networks, Veliaj emphasizes that he is without water and electricity, without medical care and without any phone calls to his family and lawyer, while emphasizing that he has refused food.

"Put in solitary confinement for 10 days. No water and no windows. No medical care. Refusal of food. No reason for the transfer, the isolation. No phone calls to family and lawyer. Safety? In the same corridor with 3 murderers, with life imprisonment ," Veliaj writes in the letter.

 

In the evening, Mayor Veliaj was visited in prison by the Ombudsman, Endrit Shabani, and his lawyer, Ndreca, where the latter described his transfer from Durrës detention center to Fier as illegal.

The lawyer added that Veliaj was not fed up because he has his own doubts about how this entire transfer was made.

Erion Veliaj has been held in Durrës prison since February 2025, when he was arrested. His transfer to Fier prison comes a day after Veliaj commented from his cell on the victory of the student movement in Serbia, describing the result as the overthrow of what he himself called the "Machiavellian and populist of Belgrade." He considered the student protests not the end of the world, but the end of a world.
