Albania will not host the European Super Cup in 2028. Despite the public interest expressed by Prime Minister Edi Rama and the lobbying of the Albanian Football Federation to bring the event to “Air Albania”, UEFA has chosen another destination. The 2028 final will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The Albanian candidacy had been made public for a long time. In September last year, Edi Rama, in the presence of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, had requested that the European Super Cup be held in Tirana in 2028. "In 2028, you will bring the Super Cup final," Rama had said during the meeting with UEFA leaders.
Albania's interest was later confirmed by the president of the Albanian Football Federation, Armand Duka. He stated that the federation was lobbying for the organization of the 2028 European Super Cup in Albania and that "Air Albania" was part of the candidacy.
But UEFA's decision was not in Tirana's favor. The UEFA Executive Committee, at a meeting held today in Thessaloniki, determined the host stadiums for the 2027 and 2028 Super Cups. The 2027 edition will be held at the "Johan Cruyff ArenA" in Amsterdam, while the 2028 Super Cup will be played at the "Astana Arena", in the capital of Kazakhstan.
Thus, after efforts to bring another major European final to “Air Albania”, Albania is left without the Super Cup. Tirana had previously hosted a UEFA Conference League final in 2022 between Roma and Feyenoord, and another major European event would be an important opportunity for Albanian football.
UEFA's decision is a disappointment for the Albanian candidacy, especially after Rama's direct request and Duka's statements about the AFF's ambition.
However, Albania will continue to have a role in organizing major UEFA events, as the country is part of the organization of the European U-21 Championship in 2027 along with Serbia.
