In 2007, Bill Clinton told an Egyptian-born student that he had a talent for politics. Nineteen years later, that student has become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. But Abdul El-Sayed's path to victory did not only involve facing Donald Trump's Republicans. In the last 48 hours, he has been politically betrayed by his rival within the Democratic Party, while a rapper who was kicked off Ed Sheeran's tour for his pro-Palestinian stances has come out in support.
Abdul El-Sayed has won the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, defeating Republican Mike Rogers, who is backed by Donald Trump. The victory, reported by Reuters on November 4, makes him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
But behind this victory lies an unusual story, which begins with Bill Clinton, continues with a fierce clash within the Democrats, and ends with the public support of rapper Macklemore.
A meeting with Bill Clinton that changed his life
In 2007, Abdul El-Sayed was a distinguished student at the University of Michigan, chosen to deliver the commencement address.
Former US President Bill Clinton was also invited to the same ceremony.
The young student's speech impressed Clinton so much that he decided to mention it publicly.
"I wish every person who believes that we are doomed to a clash of civilizations and that we cannot overcome religious divisions had heard your speech today," Clinton told him.
After the ceremony, the former president personally approached El-Sayed and asked him why he had chosen to study medicine.
Clinton told him that he had an extraordinary talent for public speaking and that he should seriously consider a career in public service.
The student's response was full of irony.
"Mr. President, I don't know if you saw my name, but it has 11 letters, and that's just the first name. I don't think it's possible for me."
El-Sayed was referring to his Muslim origins and name, which at the time seemed to him to be obstacles to an American political career.
Ten years later, in an interview with Forbes in November 2017, he admitted that Clinton's words had been a significant factor in his decision to get involved in politics.
In 2026, the video of the graduation ceremony resurfaced on social media, just one day before the election that would take El-Sayed to the Senate.
The betrayal came from his own party, just 48 hours before the elections.
The campaign was also accompanied by attacks on El-Sayed's religious identity. Republican opponents raised allegations of his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, which he denied and for which no evidence was presented.
In the end, El-Sayed managed to keep the Senate seat vacated by Gary Peters in the hands of the Democrats.
Nineteen years after Bill Clinton suggested he consider politics, the student who once doubted Americans would vote for a candidate named Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed has made history.
