With three games to go in the Champions League group stage, the final standings are becoming increasingly clear for the knockout stage.

The first 8 teams (currently including Inter and Atalanta) qualify directly for the 1/8, while the teams from the 9th to the 24th place will face each other in the playoffs (Milan and Juventus are among those at risk). Bologna, on the other hand, are almost eliminated and, even if they win their last three games, it is unclear whether they can move into the top 24 with just 10 points.

If the ranking remains as it is now, Milan will face one between City and PSV, while Juventus will face Bayern or Benfica.

ACCORDING TO CURRENT PLACES…

At the moment, the draw would pit Milan with Atletico Madrid (16th and 15th) against either Manchester City (17th) or PSV Eindhoven (18th). With three easy games to go, Milan have an excellent opportunity to go directly to the last 16, unless there are sudden collapses against Crvena Zvezda, Dinamo Zagreb or Girona. With three wins, Milan is safe in the top 8 (18 points), maybe even with two wins and a draw (16 points).

On the other hand, Juventus (19th) would align with Celtic Glasgow to challenge Bayern Munich (13th) or Benfica (14th). Also, Juventus can avoid the playoffs with three wins, but the calendar of the whites is not easy at all, as they face Manchester City, Bruges and Benfica. Currently, these are the other four possible playoff matchups: Aston Villa (9th) or Sporting Lisbon (10th) vs. Dinamo Zagreb (23rd) or Real Madrid (24th); Brest (11th) or Lille (12th) against Feyenoord (21st) or Bruges (22nd).

WHAT DO THE REGULATIONS SAY?

"The matches of the direct elimination stage of the Champions League playoff are determined by lot according to the following principles:

- Clubs join according to their positions at the end of the group stage to form four seeded pairs (clubs in places 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14, and 15 and 16) and four non-seeded pairs (places 17 and 18, 19 and 20, 21 and 22, and 23 and 24);

- Clubs in each seeded pair are drawn to play against non-seeded clubs as follows: Club 9 or 10 vs. Club 23 or 24, Club 11 or 12 vs. Club 21 or 22, Club 13 or 14 vs. Club 19 or 20, and club 15 or 16 against club 17 or 18;

- As a principle, the clubs at the top of the series will play the homecoming matches".
