Secret meeting on Iran: Military leaders of the US, Israel and 7 Arab countries

Top military commanders from the US, Israel and several Arab countries met in Germany last week to discuss the war with Iran and broader tensions in the Middle East. The meeting, which was not officially announced by the participating countries, was organized by the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper.

According to two Israeli officials quoted by Axios, the meeting was attended, in addition to Admiral Cooper, by the chiefs of staff of the armies of Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt.

The meeting is a significant development, as it is the first time such a group of military commanders has met since the start of the war between the US, Israel and Iran more than six months ago.

Cooper: US will not withdraw troops from the region

During the meeting, Admiral Brad Cooper assured his counterparts that the US Army does not plan to withdraw forces from the Middle East, despite Iranian attacks on American bases in the region.

Cooper also briefed participants on the US plan to expand shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic energy transport points in the world.

For his part, the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, General Eyal Zamir, informed the participants about the Israeli army's operations on various fronts.

CENTCOM confirmed the meeting took place but did not provide details on the discussions. In a statement, the US command said it had hosted “senior military leaders from eight countries” at a planned conference in Germany, where opportunities for strengthening security cooperation in the Middle East were discussed.

Israel-Saudi Arabia cooperation is deepening

The meeting comes at a time when military and security cooperation between Israel and countries in the region has intensified significantly.

This process received a significant boost after the signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain in September 2020.

Shortly thereafter, Israel was transferred from the area of responsibility of the US European Command (EUCOM) to that of CENTCOM, creating greater opportunities for military cooperation with Arab countries under the umbrella of the American command.

During the war, Israel has cooperated with the United States and the United Arab Emirates in defensive and operational operations. According to Israeli officials, Israel has deployed the Iron Dome missile defense system in the Emirates and provided real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assistance.

Also, during the war, the exchange of intelligence information between Israel and other Arab countries in the region increased.

The Houthis are also in focus

The meeting took place as the Houthis have intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia, advancing on the ground and, according to sources cited by Axios, taking effective control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea.

A source familiar with the developments said that Israel and Saudi Arabia, with the assistance of CENTCOM, are discussing the possibility of Israel supporting Saudi military operations against the Houthis.

Potential support would also include providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data, in a model similar to the assistance Israel has provided to the United Arab Emirates.

The meeting in Germany points to increasingly close coordination between the US, Israel and Arab countries on regional security issues, at a time of high tensions with Iran and its allied actors in the Middle East.
