Russia could set up a military base in Ukraine's Kherson region, reports the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, writes The Guardian.

Russia invaded Ukraine's southern Kherson region in mid-March, adjacent to Crimea, which Moscow has controlled since 2014.

It has since installed a new administration there and introduced the Russian ruble as its currency, with the aim of integrating the region as part of Russian territory.

"There has to be a Russian military base in the Kherson region," Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of what Russia calls Kherson's 'regional civil-military administration,' told RIA.
