The Presidency of the University Union has decided to boycott teaching at all public universities in Albania, in solidarity with the protesting students and pupils. The boycott begins on Wednesday, October 21, and will continue until further notice.

In its statement, the union argues that “students have been protesting for months for quality education, dignified healthcare, security of life and property, and accountability.” According to it, their demands have been met with silence and, since October 13, violence against protesters.

Teachers say they “cannot continue teaching normally while their students face violence on the streets.” They also raise concerns about “political and economic developments, corruption, and the lack of meritocracy.”

The union demands “an immediate end to violence against students and peaceful protesters, an independent and transparent investigation into the use of force since October 13, and the accountability of those who ordered or used it.” It also demands legal and dignified treatment for every student escorted by the police and the fulfillment of the demands of students and pupils.

The union has called on rectors and heads of higher education institutions to respect the decision and not take disciplinary measures against teachers or students who participate in the protest.

The statement emphasizes that the boycott does not constitute abandoning the auditoriums, but a form of reaction in defense of the rights and dignity of students.

In addition to the boycott, the lecturers announce that they will actively participate in the protest. They will gather every day, at 10:00, in front of the Central Building of the Polytechnic University of Tirana, in support of the students.
