Hot summer warned, Spain records temperatures above 40 degrees in May

Parts of Spain are experiencing their hottest May ever with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in some countries, according to state weather agency AEMET.

The agency issued hot weather warnings in 10 regions for Saturday, saying it could be "one of the most intense heat waves" in years.

The city of Jaén in southern Spain recorded May's highest temperature of 40 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Climate change is making heat waves more frequent and intense.

Spain's warm spring weather is the result of hot air coming from North Africa, causing temperatures to rise as high as 15 degrees Celsius above average for this time of year.

The worst-hit regions are Andalusia in the south, Extremadura in the south-west, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha in the centre and Aragon in the north-east.

Spain's health ministry called on residents to drink plenty of water and stay in cool places where possible. Among the advice was to reduce physical activity.
