Thorsten Kuntz

Thorsten Kuntz, 51, is the managing director of Rheinmetall, Germany's largest arms producer, which supplies tanks to Ukraine. His disappearance for four days in a row has raised some questions in Germany.

His case resembles a thriller movie. He has mysteriously disappeared, to reappear after four days, completely drunk and in a clear state of confusion.

It can be considered a common case of alcoholism, but for someone else.

Kuntz runs the company that in recent weeks has provided the German government with 88 Leopard 1 tanks and 100 Marder armored vehicles to be delivered to the Ukrainian army.

It was the Bild Zeitung newspaper that revealed his disappearance, which dates back to May 13, when Kassel police announced that they were looking for a 50-year-old man who had not reported for work and had been absent from all meetings. privately scheduled that day and no longer answered the phone.

The announcement was accompanied by a photo, taken by a video camera, showing Thorsten K. withdrawing from an ATM.

Just last Sunday, a police car fell in the footsteps of the missing person near the Kassel fair, inside a car, in a drunken state.

Kutz needed medical attention and was taken to a hospital.

The reasons for his temporary disappearance remain unknown.

But the role of Kutz, who has led the German arms giant since January 2022, nurtures a variety of hypotheses: was he kidnapped for a warning or was it a purely private matter?

Neither the Federal Prosecutor's Office investigating the incident, nor the BKA, the Federal Criminal Police Office, nor Rheinmetall provided details about the incident.

Kutz has been classified as a "secret keeper" by federal intelligence, but it is unclear whether he has state protection in that capacity.

Just yesterday, the Berlin government said it was ready to replace the Rheinmetall Leopard 1s and 15 Leopard 2s, which will be delivered to Ukraine after passing through the Czech Republic.
