Cases of smallpox have been identified in European and American countries, giving health authorities another reason to worry amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

As health officials are monitoring the progress of cases, the outbreak of the disease is surprising as so far no infections have been reported outside African countries, according to the BBC.

The disease now appears to be spreading to people who have not traveled to Africa and the cases have been detected mainly in gay and bisexual youth. Most human cases have been reported in Central and West Africa, where the disease is endemic.

But in which countries has the disease spread so far?
Cats of monkey pox are being investigated in European countries, as well as in the US, Canada and Australia, according to health authorities and local media reports. Recent cases have been reported in France, Italy, Sweden and Australia.

Spain and Portugal are the first two countries to be reported first infected, while Canada is investigating 13 cases. The monkey line is most common in areas of Central and West Africa, reports abcnews.al

Monkey pox is a rare viral infection, which is usually mild and from which most people recover within a few weeks, according to the UK National Health Service.

The virus does not spread easily among people and the risk to the general public is said to be very low. The first case of the disease in the UK was reported on 7 May. The patient had recently traveled to Nigeria, where he is believed to have been infected with the virus before traveling to England, the UK Health and Safety Agency said.

Now the UK has reported 9 cases. Australia reported on Friday the first suspected case, in a man who fell ill after returning from a trip to Europe. Sweden and Italy reported the first case, while in France a suspected case was reported.

Swedish authorities said they were not sure how the individual was infected with the virus, but local media reported that the individual in Italy had recently returned from the Canary Islands. Five cases were also reported in Portugal on Wednesday, as well as seven in Spain, reports abcnews.al.

Although no vaccine has been approved for monkeypox in Europe, Spanish health authorities have reportedly purchased thousands of smallpox vaccines to control the outbreak, according to the Spanish newspaper El País.

In North America, health authorities in the US state of Massachusetts also confirmed the first case. The infected person was a man who had traveled to Canada.

According to health officials, the man was hospitalized, is in "good condition" and "does not pose a danger to the public."

The disease was first identified by scientists in 1958, when there were two outbreaks of a "flax-like" disease in monkeys used for research. The first human infection was recorded in 1970, in a nine-year-old boy in Congo.

Symptoms of the disease include fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, fatigue and redness of the hands and face.
