Danish Prime Minister Resigns: Social Democrats Record Worst Election Result
Mette Frederiksen

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has officially submitted her resignation following a heavy defeat for her three-party coalition in the general election, the Royal Palace announced in a statement.

Political parties will begin lengthy and potentially difficult negotiations to decide whether the next government will be led by Frederiksen again or by another party leader.

The Social Democratic Party, of which she is the leader, recorded its worst result since 1903, winning just 38 seats in the 179-seat parliament, down from 50 four years ago, as voters expressed concerns over immigration, the cost of living crisis and the social welfare system.

Frederiksen’s left-wing bloc won a total of 84 seats in parliament, while right-wing parties took 77, leaving both parties short of the required 90-seat majority. That leaves both parties dependent on the 14 seats won by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s Moderate Party, a centrist group that could emerge as a “kingmaker” in coalition negotiations.

However, the Social Democratic Party remains the largest party in Denmark, with 21.9 percent support, meaning Frederiksen could return for a third term as prime minister after coalition negotiations are concluded.
