Warning: Europe could face fuel shortages by April

Shell CEO Wael Sawan has stated that Europe could face energy and fuel shortages as early as next month if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

The head of Europe's largest oil company said he was working with governments to help them address the oil and gas supply crisis, which has already led to energy rationing in Asian countries.

Oil prices fell back to around $100 a barrel on Wednesday from a peak of around $114 earlier in the week, following reports that the White House has sent Iran's leaders a 15-point peace plan.

However, without a return of crude oil supplies from the Persian Gulf to global buyers via the vital Strait of Hormuz, Europe could face fossil fuel shortages within weeks.

Sawan told a conference in Texas that South Asia was the first to take that weight. According to him, that has shifted to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and then even more to Europe as we enter April.

He said the crisis, now in its fourth week, had already affected jet fuel supplies, the price of which has doubled since the start of the conflict, and oil could come under pressure.

The stark warning was also echoed at the same industrial conference, where German Economy Minister Katharina Reiche warned that energy supply shortages could occur in late April or May if the conflict continues.
